What is Potholing?
Potholing vacuum excavation is a commonly used excavation procedure for utility companies when locating underground utilities.
Workers create a test hole, approximately 8 to 12 inches in diameter, to locate and expose any underground utilities. A vacuum excavator is used to continue digging until the utility line is discovered. Using a vacuum excavator instead of shoveling or using heavy machinery will ensure that none of the soil surrounding the line will be disturbed or the utility lines are accidentally disturbed.
Potholing is also known as daylighting since it should be completed during daylight hours. It can also be used to determine the position and orientation of the utility as well as check the line for any damage.
The Benefits of Potholing Services
Many utility companies prefer potholing over traditional excavation methods because the hydro and air pressure used in the digging does no damage to the lines. Other than protecting the underground utilities, there are several advantages to choosing potholing over traditional excavation.
Finishing the Work Quickly
The work is still completed in the same amount of time it would take to use an excavator or backhoe.
Safety to Your Workers
Since it’s a safer way to find dangerous utility infrastructure underground, your workers’ lives are not placed in danger.
Saving Money and Time
Downtime at the worksite will all but be eliminated since there is no risk of damage to the utilities. This will save you time and money in the end.
Accurate Details of the Utilities
You will get a more accurate insight into the location of the utilities, which will prevent property damage, injury, and any delays in service.
