Vacuum Excavation

What is Hydro Vacuum Excavation?

Hydro vacuum excavation, also known as “soft dig,” is the use of equipment with high-pressure air or water to control the excavation of dirt and gravel safely. The air or water will displace the soil, also known as spoil, which will then get sucked up through a vacuum hose. The debris tank on the hydro excavator will hold the spoils for later disposal or for backfilling the holes or trenches.

Vacuum excavation is a safer, less invasive excavation method and reduces the need for manual digging or using abrasive excavation methods that could damage the environment, such as hydraulic excavators. It lessens any health risks to on-site workers and keeps them safe without the need to enter a trench and risking a cave-in.

In addition, soft dig excavation is safe for any utilities that are underground. Since there is no digging equipment used, there are no concerns of puncturing pipes, resulting in costly repairs.

Hydro vacuum excavation is also ideal for areas where the ground is frozen. In situations such as this, the water on the truck can be heated to thaw the ground and break up the frozen soil.

What is Vacuum Excavation Used For?

Soft dig excavation can be beneficial for a number of reasons, such as:

  • Locating and exposing underground infrastructure, also known as daylighting
  • Digging a trench to install pipelines, cables, or other utilities
  • Debris removal for a site
  • Cold-weather digging
  • Digging various depth and diameter holes to lay different types of pilings

Vacuum excavation is used in a variety of industries such as oil and gas companies, environmental firms, construction firms, and utility owners. It’s one of the safest ways to dig today.
